Aya Kobayashi Creative Learning Associate
Born in Japan, Aya trained at Rambert School then completed her MA at the University of Chichester. As a performer she has worked with companies and independent choreographers such as Flexer&Sandiland, Rosemary Lee, Charlie Morrissey, Kerry Nicholls, Pete Shenton (New Art Club), Gecko Theatre and Lila Dance. Aya has presented her work in the UK and abroad at locations including The Place, QEH, Birmingham Hippodrome, Theatre Royal Plymouth, Northern Ballet, Stoke Mandeville Stadium (Paralympic 2012 Torch relay ceremony), Tokyo and Madrid.
Since 2009 Aya has been working as a Resident Artist for Anjali Dance Company, which works with dancers who have learning disabilities, and she has choreographed a number of works for the company. She enjoys working within inclusive and intergenerational groups and dedicates herself to develop the artistry within the community. She recently presented audience participation works for family festivals in Tate Modern and Tate Britain. Most recently she choreographed on a community in Ofunato, one of the tsunami disaster areas of North East Japan as part of Sanriku International Festival. Aya has taught at Independent Dance, Greenwich Dance, Brighton Dance Network, Rambert School, University of Chichester, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Surrey.
